The vaping has caught everyone by surprise. China created the electronic cigarette a decade ago, it has spread through Europe and the US has raised a billion dollar industry before governments have had time to legislate. On the streets of Spain they have sprouted stores that sell equipment for vapear, including free tastings. In 2009 there were only two; and now there are more than 3,000 tobacconists without the need to distribute these products.
Tobacconists confirm that they have sold like hotcakes. Besides the electronic device, rechargeable cans sold with different amounts of liquid nicotine, from 0 to 24 milligrams. Each load costs about five euros and, according to the manufacturer “withstand five times more than a conventional cigarette package.” These fluids are composed of four ingredients: glycerol, propylene glycol, nicotine, and for flavor, herbal extracts or food. Some of the compounds mimic the taste of snuff brands.
But in March he jumped the first major alarm. At the University Hospital of A Coruña they were diagnosed a case of lipoid pneumonia associated with consumption of electronic cigarettes. It is the second case detected in the world.
Dr. Julia Tabara, head of the smoking cessation clinic of the hospital, said this man, used to smoke forty cigarettes a day, began using the vapeador to enter the hospital “by a pathology not related to smoking. “Doctors discovered fatty nodules in their lungs and blamed the present vegetable glycerin in the liquid electronic cigarette. After leaving consumption, he evolved well and was discharged, after which continue to smoke “conventional snuff, though less than before.”
The first case of lipoid pneumonia was published in 2012. It was a 42 year old woman who entered the Legacy Good Samaritan Portland, Oregon Medical Center, seven months after suffering poor breathing, coughing and subjective fever. These symptoms coincide with adoption of the electronic cigarette. His record showed above diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, schizoaffective disorder and hypertension. The woman had been medicated with drugs for hypertension, vitamin complexes, psychotropic drugs and also used an albuterol inhaler for asthma.
Moreover, both shared many similarities in the diagnosis and its association with the electronic cigarette. The case caused great commotion just at a time when both the Congress of Deputies and the European Union were deciding what treatment they had to give with electronic cigarettes: the lifelong snuff or the nicotine patches.
Then they began to appear the first dissenting voices, some other doctors who defend the vaping as a method to quit snuff are arguing that glycerol, as its own termination suggests, is not a lipid in itself but a spirit that is part some lipids in combination with fatty acids.
